Vermicomposting

My latest venture in the world of organic gardening has been vermicomposting, or more accurately put, keeping lots of pet worms and harvesting their poop for fertiliser.

I ordered 1lb (~1,000 worms, they told me) on ebay for $35, and am keeping them in a 18-gallon storage tub I bought at Big Lots for $4. We made bedding out of damp newspaper strips, and I've been feeding them chopped banana peels.

For the first few days, the poor wormies kept trying to escape through the lid. A few actually got out and dried up, like those worms you find on your driveways after a rain. I put these toasty fellas back in the bin, becauese that's how composting works, right? I guess that they either learned their lesson upon being fed their jailbroken companions- because they aren't trying to escape anymore.

There is a multitude of sites with instructions for making worm bins (most featuring anthropomorphous worms wearing cowboy hats), so if you're interested, check it out.
