Neopaganism

I have recently be studying different chapters of Neopaganism. I am particularly interested in

  • their general nature-oriented ideologies
  • their emphasis on spirituality and celebration

Some things that are drawing me away from them, however, are

  • a perceived attitude of overprotection toward pagan faiths (though this may be warrented)
  • a general disagreement of historical basis and centralisation
  • ambiguous differentation between the symbolic and real (especially in dealing with supernatural and deities, thoug I may simply not understand this thoroughy enough)

I am currently reading Margot Adler's 1979 Drawing Down the Moon, which I am finding to be an extremely pragmatic dissection of the Neopagan movement. Amanda also lent me some books, which I am going to read; though I am not sure that they will provide the same historical and biographical context that Adler's book does.

Most of the resources I am finding are focused mostly on practise, and not so much about contemporary relevance. This is very romantic and beautiful, though it bothers me, because it also strikes me as a big dogmatic.

If anyone has any other ideas as to sources for learning this sort of thing, let me know.
